Bumping

  1. Bumping is a term that is used when one employee who is being laid off demotes to a class in which that employee had permanent status and that employee has more seniority than another employee in the same class. As a result, the less senior employee is "bumped" out of his position in favor of the employee with more seniority. For example: An employee may demote back to a former class where they held status and that may cause another employee with less seniority in that class to be bumped out of the position.
