  • September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month - Since prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men, and the survival rates approaches 100% when diagnosed and treated early, Sacramento County is joining communities across the nation to proclaim September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.   • Redistricting Hearing Continues Today at 2:15 p.m. - The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors will hear public comments and continue discussions on proposed redistricting plans to adjust supervisorial district boundaries.   • New Low-Cost Prescription Program for All Residents - A new prescription program, the Sac Best Rx Savings Program, is now available at no cost to all residents of Sacramento County and the region. Save up to 75% off generic medications. Learn more by reading the news release.

  • Sacramento County Receives National Recognition - The Board of Supervisors will present National Association of Counties Achievement Award certificates of recognition to three Sacramento County innovative, cost-saving projects.   • Planning Counter Hours Restored - The public counter hours of the downtown Planning Division will be open five days a week effective Monday, August 22. For more information visit the Planning website or read the news release.

  • Choose to Receive Your Sample Ballot Booklet Online or by Mail - Voters can ‘go green’ by choosing to opt out of receiving their sample ballot booklet by mail, and accessing it online instead. Find out more about your options.

  • New County Executive Begins - County Executive Brad Hudson begins as County Executive Officer today. Previously Hudson was the City Manager for the City of Riverside and the Assistant CEO for Riverside County totaling over 20 years of leadership in the Riverside area..

  • Stepping Up Enforcement on Marijuana Facilities - Enforcement will continue on operators and property owners who allow marijuana facilities to operate on their property. Enforcement will include a coordinated response by the Sheriff, Business Licensing, Building Inspection and Code Enforcement staff. For details, view the news release.

  • Supervisors Vote to Pursue Legislation as Option for Parks Funding  - On August 9, Supervisors decided to seek state legislation that would give the County the option of pursuing a 0.1 percent sales tax increase to generate revenue for regional parks. Ideas for stable, long-term funding are among the many ideas that are being researched and developed to insure the stability of our beautiful park system.   • Departing County Executive Honored - A resolution was presented to Steve Szalay on August 10 in recognition of his many contributions during his tenure as Interim County Executive since January 2010. A new Executive, Brad Hudson, will begin with the County on August 15.

  • 100 Adoptions at Kitty Palooza Event - The Kitty Palooza event last weekend exceeded the previous year’s total adoptions. What's more, cats weren’t the only ones to get a new home, as 20 of the 100 adopted animals were dogs! A big thank you goes out to those who adopted and to animal shelter staff and volunteers that made the event possible.

  • Public Hearing on Redistricting Continues August 9 - The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors will consider several draft redistricting proposals and hear public comments on Tuesday, August 9 at 2:15 p.m. at 700 H Street. Read press release for more information and see draft proposals.

  • 8th Street Construction Closure, 6pm-6am - Downtown, August 4 – October 15, a Sacramento County pipe replacement project on 8th Street, between F and H Streets, will divert traffic, 6 p.m. – 6 a.m. During construction hours, detours will modify traffic flow and access to county parking lots.   • Sacramento’s Ultimate Garden Event - Get gardening advice from Master Gardeners, tour the unique Horticulture Center, sample fresh fruits and vegetables, and watch demonstrations at the Harvest Day event on Saturday, August 6, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Event is free and open to everyone.   • No Need to Drive Downtown to Handle County Business - The North and East Community Service Centers offer a wide variety of services including: Building Permits and Code Enforcement; Certified Copies of Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates; County Utilities Billing Drop Box (checks or money orders only); and Pet Licensing (check or cash only).   • County Telephone Lines are Back Up  - Prior to 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 3, the County experienced an internal telephone system disruption. At approximately 10:30 a.m., county staff got the phone system back functioning normally. Thank you for your patience during the outage.

  • Benefit for Sheriff K9 Retirees - The annual Kaleo’s 5K Run/1-Mile Walk will be held Sunday, August 7, in Carmichael.   • New Growth Management Strategies Reviewed - As part of the 2030 General Plan update for the unincorporated area, a new refined growth management plan was reviewed by the Board on July 20. The plan offers flexibility while providing for sustainable growth. For more information, read news release.

  • Board Votes to Develop Permanent Medical Marijuana Ordinance - A deliberative process will be initiated including further analysis and public hearings. Because dispensaries are not currently permitted in the unincorporated County, staff will return to the Board on August 10 at 10:30 a.m. with a report and recommendation on enhanced enforcement options.

  • Free Whooping Cough Clinics Scheduled for August - Junior high and high school students need to be immunized against whooping cough prior to starting school this fall.   • Redistricting Hearing Continued to August 9 - The Board of Supervisors continued a public hearing to consider redistricting proposals and hear public testimony to Tuesday, August 9 at 2:15 p.m. Redistricting is done every ten years following the US census.   • Unsecured Property Taxes Due - Annual bills for Sacramento County unsecured property taxes, (property such as a boat or aircraft) for fiscal year 2011-12 are being mailed to property owners and are payable without delinquent penalties through August 31, 2011.   • Supervisors Vote to Keep Options Open for Parks Funding - Following a workshop on the funding and governance of the County’s 15,000-acre Regional Park system, the Board of Supervisors voted on July 19 to continue exploring all options for the Parks’ future, including what would be necessary to pursue legislation for a 1/10 cent sales tax.   • Changes to Garbage and Recycling Service for County Customers - Beginning August 1, approximately 75,000 County customers in the unincorporated area will have service changes for garbage, recycling, and green waste. Customers can find more information on Waste Management’s website.

  • Recognizing Local Partners For Funding Immunization - Three local health systems are being recognized for providing funding for the Immunization Assistance Program and improving the health of the region’s children. For more information, read the news release.

  • Volunteers Needed July 22-23, Eppie’s Great Race® - Therapeutic Recreation Services is looking for volunteers to help out with the race; visit the Eppie’s Great Race website or view the flyer for more information. Therapeutic Recreation Services provides services to individuals with disabilities, provides volunteers for the annual race and is the beneficiary of the triathlon proceeds.

  • Health Inspectors Make Sure Food is Safe at the California State Fair - The Environmental Management Department will inspect more than 150 vendors for food safety when the fair opens on Thursday, July 14. Inspectors check for everything from correct food temperatures, water availability, proper hand washing, to food sources. Read press release for more information.

  • Pet Licensing Amnesty Program Returns! Now through October 31, the late fee of $100 will be waived for Sacramento County pet owners who need to license their pets.   • New Whooping Cough Law - A new state law goes into effect on July 1 that requires all children entering 7th-12th grade to have a whooping cough booster shot (called a Tdap). For details visit the Public Health website.

  • Search Restaurant Health Inspection Reports Online – The Environmental Management Department inspects more than 6,000 Sacramento food facilities including restaurants, bars, grocery stores, and school cafeterias. Find out if your favorite eatery received a green, yellow, or red placard; view the inspection reports.

  • Providing Online Resources for Laid Off Employees - Job Search Resources information is provided on the Employment and Layoff Information page. Those displaced county employees are encouraged to utilize those online job search materials, explore the county’s re-employment process and other job opportunities.

  • Property Tax Roll Update - Sacramento County Assessor Kathleen Kelleher announced that the 2011-12 tax roll was completed on July 1. Assessed value information for all Sacramento County parcels will be available July 5 on the Assessor’s website Parcel Viewer.   • Fourth of July Pet Safety Tips - Pet owners can take a few simple precautions to make sure pets are safe and secure. Visit the Animal Shelter's website to learn more.

  • Fourth of July Weekend on the American River Parkway - Alcohol between Hazel and Watt Avenues is prohibited on July 2, 3 and 4. Rafters and boaters should be cautious; the American River is running cold and fast. Parkway details and increased holiday rates are available in the news release.

  • County Holiday Office Closure - In observance of Independence Day, Sacramento County offices will be closed on Monday, July 4. As always, garbage service will continue as well as all emergency services. All offices will return to their normal business hours on Tuesday, July 5.

  • Two River Access Points Closed Due to High River Flows - Water releases down the American River have been increased due to snowpack melt and the river is running fast and cold. Boating, rafting and swimming are strongly discouraged. The Howe Avenue river access and Sunrise boat launch are closed until further notice.

  • Sacramento County Piloting Energy-Saving Technologies - Federal Stimulus Grants from the Department of Energy are funding two projects: wireless thermostats and motion-controlled lighting. These projects will save energy dollars and serve as a case study for other local governments. For details, read news release.

  • Electronic Recording Delivery System Comes to Sacramento County - The Clerk/Recorder made recording history in March by accepting and confirming its first electronically recorded public document. This new process will help expedite recording for title companies by allowing them to avoid sending paper documents by mail or courier. Read News release.

  • Board Votes to Continue Medical Marijuana Ordinance - The Board of Supervisors has unanimously agreed to revisit the urgency ordinance designed to regulate cultivation and dispensing medical marijuana in the unincorporated area on July 27.   • Resources for Employees Facing Layoffs - Special Outplacement Workshops are being offered to displaced county employees to explain available services and programs. This is an opportunity to access representatives from California Employment Development Department (EDD) and Sacramento Employment & Training Agency (SETA), and for the County’s Personnel Services Department to explain retirement and general benefits such as COBRA and unemployment insurance.   • 2nd Annual Animal Shelter "Flea" Market, June 25-26 Join us - Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. to get great deals on one-of-a-kind items!   • World Masters Athletics Outdoor Championships - More than 4,800 athletes from 93 countries will compete in the international track and field event to be held July 6-17 in Sacramento. The Sacramento Sports Commission has been preparing for this large-scale event for the last four years with venue sites located throughout the Sacramento area. Read the press release for details.

  • New County Executive Named - The Board of Supervisors has appointed Brad Hudson as the new County Executive for Sacramento County, effective August 14. Hudson will bring strong leadership skills and a proven track record of stimulating economic growth, successfully balancing budgets and managing people, working with both city and county governments.   • Hazel Avenue Off-Ramp and Lane Closures -The off-ramp from westbound U.S. 50 to Hazel Avenue will be closed June 15-17 and 20-22, 9 pm – 5 am.   • New State Legislation Ratifies County Labor Agreements - On June 13, with a collaborative effort of Sacramento County and its Recognized Employee Organizations (REO), the California Governor signed AB329 into law. Authored by Assembly Member Roger Dickinson, the bill permits the County to apply a new retirement tier for newly hired public safety employees for those REOs that have reached agreement with the County.   • Board of Supervisors Approve Recommended Budget - The Board approved the $3.5B spending plan for the Recommended Budget. The plan provides for services including Airports, Child Protective Services, Landfill Operations, Property Tax collections, Public Health, Public Safety, Transportation and many others.   • Eppie’s Great Race© Delivers Proceeds - A tradition continues as the Board of Supervisors accepted a $20,000 check from the 2010 Eppie’s Great Race© to support Therapeutic Recreation Services.   • River-Friendly Landscaping Workshops - Learn how to save water and grow healthy plants at free workshops on Saturday, June 11, from 10 am - 2 pm, in the Florin Creek Recreation Center. Get tips on how to reduce/eliminate the need for water, fertilizers and pesticides, and talk to UC Master Gardeners about plant and insect problems. Read press release for details.

  • Outstanding Fleet Maintenance Methods Save Money and Time – Due to new regulations, we purchased and now operate our own filter cleaning unit for our diesel fleet. This saves our customers at least one day in service time, and as much as $150 per each cleaning. The processes will be used to train government fleets throughout California.
  • Regional Collaboration on Animal Services - The County is working with the Sacramento Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the City of Sacramento to streamline and improve services to the region. The County will work to craft an agreement that ensures quality care, protects our current employees and improves service delivery.

  • Budget Information Released - Details of Sacramento County’s recommended budget, including dates and times for hearings which will begin on June 6 at 9:30 a.m., are now available. Find more information on the Budget website

  • County Holiday Office Closure - In observance of Memorial Day, Sacramento County offices will be closed on Monday, May 30. As always, emergency services will be available, and garbage pick-up will continue. All offices will return to their normal business hours on Tuesday, May 31.

  • Memorial Day Weekend Reminders for River and Park Visitors - Please note the changes to park entrance fees and the ban of alcoholic beverages on the shore and along the American River Parkway this holiday weekend.   • Recreational Water Illness and Injury Prevention Week is May 23 – 29 - A Board of Supervisors’ resolution on Tuesday, May 24 at 9:50 a.m. proclaimed May 23 – 29 as Recreational Water Illness and Injury Prevention Week in Sacramento County.   • Redistricting Workshops Continue Through June 15 - After each U.S. census, Sacramento County redraws supervisorial district boundaries.   • Zinfandel Drive Construction Begins - On May 19, the two-lane extension of Zinfandel Drive to Douglas Road will begin, and will connect to Mather. The project, using Mather 2008 Tax-Exempt Bonds, will be complete by November 2011. Press release is available.

  • National Public Works Week is May 15 through 21 - A Board of Supervisors’ resolution on May 4 will celebrate the hard work and dedication of Sacramento County’s public works professionals who provide and maintain our roads and bridges, sewer and water delivery systems and much more. In its 51st year, this year’s theme ‘Public Works: Serving You and Your Community.

  • Supporting May is Bike Month - An eight mile section of Scott Road from White Road Rock to Latrobe Road will be closed Sunday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide cyclists and pedestrians an opportunity to safely ride and walk on the scenic stretch of road. View news release for details.

  • May Promotions at the County Animal Shelter - Celebrate Cinco De Meowo on May 5 with adult cat adoption fees waived and kittens half-off.   • Volunteers To Be Thanked for American River Parkway Cleanup - The Board of Supervisors is publicly thanking the American River Parkway Association and a host of organizations for cleaning up the area around the Northgate access. View News release.

  • New Director of Water Resources Department - Named Michael Peterson has been appointment as Director of the Department effective May 8. Peterson brings 23 years of experience in floodplain management, drainage design and development, operations and maintenance and stormwater quality. View News release.

  • May is Older Americans Month - Sacramento County recognizes May as a month to celebrate the more than 170,000 local citizens aged 65 and older for their contributions to our culture, economy and community character.
  • Join us for the County Executive’s 2nd Annual Veterans Mixer - A fundraiser is scheduled for May 25 at 5:30 p.m. to honor local veterans and help provide meeting space for their activities. View County Executive website for details.

  • Discovery Park Opening - Most of the park was reopened April 30, and will be completely open by May 7. Regional Parks is working to clean park sites and make them safe for the public's use after the heavy winter rains.

  • National Children’s Mental Health Awareness - Sacramento County begins their celebration of National Children’s Mental Health Awareness on Saturday, April 30, at Rancho Cordova’s 22nd annual Kid’s Day in the Park. Train rides, swimming, crafts, arts, games, food, a petting zoo and more guarantee a day of pleasure for families. Free admission. Read the Press Release.

  • 2011 Homeless Count Results - The Department of Human Assistance and Sacramento Steps Forward released the results of the Point-in-Time Homeless Count conducted on January 27, 2011. The count shows chronic homelessness in Sacramento County has decreased 50% since 2007, and overall homelessness decreased 15% since 2009.   • Funding Secured for Children’s Flu Vaccination Clinics  - Thanks to generous donations from Kaiser Permanente and UC Davis Medical Center, flu vaccination clinics for hundreds of children in schools will continue this fall. For complete details, view the Public Health website.

  • Amgen Stage 2 Finish in Sacramento - The Sacramento Sports Commission, responsible for bringing the May 16th Stage 2 of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California through Sacramento County, presented race highlights to the Board of Supervisors on April 26. The May 15 –22 race will feature cyclists on a course from South Lake Tahoe to Thousand Oaks.

  • Law Enforcement Memorial - Join local law enforcement officials in commemorating officers who have given their lives in the line of duty in 2010 as part of “National Police Week.” On Thursday, April 28th at noon, a Remembrance Ceremony will take place at the Sacramento Police & Sheriff’s Memorial, 500 Arden Way, Sacramento.   • Sacramento County Secures Twelve Labor Agreements - The newest agreements brings the total number of employees now covered by contracts that extend into future years to 8,727.8, or about 75 percent of the approximate total of 11,600 County employees. Read News Release.

  • Whisker Wednesdays and Weekends! - Now through May 29, all whiskered animals at the County Animal Shelter, including cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and rabbits, are half off on Wednesdays and Weekends (Sat. and Sun.). View adoption flyer.

  • Discovery Park to Remain Closed Through Easter Weekend; Fee Increase for Holiday in Effect - Regional Parks plans to re-open Discovery Park by April 30, weather permitting.   • Grand Jury Report on Ingentra - Sacramento County is pleased at the Grand Jury’s confirmation of no criminal activity on the part of County employees and that there was criminal fraud on the part of Ingentra.   • Second Property Tax Installment Due - The second installment of 2010-11 Sacramento County property taxes is due no later than April 10; because April 10 falls on a Sunday, taxpayers have until the next business day, Monday April 11, 2011, to pay the second installment without penalty.   • Visit the Lisa Project Exhibit This Month - In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, visit this compelling, multi-sensory exhibit which allows you to hear, see and experience the reality of child abuse from the child’s point of view.
